Cells are considered the building blocks of life because they fulfill all common characteristics shared by living organisms. Whether solo in the simplest life forms, or joined with millions in a complex tissue or organ system, all cells have prominent similarities. They regulate their internal conditions, contain genetic material, and utilize energy to function. However, in biology we rely on differences of internal structure to categorize various types of cells.
