Materials and MethodsSection

Instructions: Using the steps below and the GoogleDoc research template, begin to formulate your introduction.

1) Start by reading over the requirements for the materials and methods section in your rubric (you should have this downloaded already! if not, please go to the previous page and do so).

2) Then, take a look at the "tips" list below. This details features of a good materials and methods section.

Materials and Methods Tips:

  • Clarity & Detail – It should provide enough information for another researcher to replicate the study.
  • Logical Organization – Typically follows the sequence in which experiments were conducted.
  • Concise Yet Comprehensive – Avoid unnecessary details while ensuring all critical steps and materials are described.
  • Proper Use of Past Tense & Passive Voice – Since the experiments have already been conducted, use the past tense (e.g., "Samples were analyzed using...").
  • Specificity in Measurements & Procedures – Include exact quantities, concentrations, durations, temperatures, equipment specifications, and model numbers.
  • Source Citations for Standard Methods – If using established procedures, cite the original sources instead of describing them in full (for this - you will need to detail the slime mold transfer procedure. To cite this, please reference the instructions Mr. Dawkins gave you on the initial "practice day" )
  • Ethical Considerations – If applicable, mention approval from ethics boards (e.g., for human or animal research).
  • Statistical Methods Explanation – Describe how data was analyzed, including software used and significance thresholds.
