4.1 - Text Reading

4.1 - Text Reading Focus Questions and Connections -

Complete in unit guide or notebook. USE COMPLETE SENTENCES.

1) 6.1-6.5 Due 11/4

WHILE YOU READ FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING:

a) Summarize cell respiration:

- CONNETION 1: How is figure 6.1 similar/different from the "handshake of life" notes from unit 1?

CONNECTION 2: What type of body cells would have a higher concentration of mitochondria (see "cell observation" lab)

b) Record the BALANCED equation for cell respiration and describe where each reactant comes from and where each product goes or is used for (add the number of ATP molecules each glucose molecule can produce). Add which molecule is getting oxidized and which is getting reduced

c) Oxidation v. reduction? (What is a redox reaction).

d) What is the role of NAD+ in cell respiration?

3) 6.9-6.12 Due 11/10

WHILE YOU READ FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING: (no need to do any diagramming for this assignment - we will diagram during video/class lessons)

a) What happens to acetyl CoA at the start of the citric acid cycle?

b) Summarize the citric acid cycle in detail.

CONNECTION: What major product is formed in the citric acid cycle? (see overall cell respiration chemical reaction)

c) What is FAD? How is it similar to NAD+

d) What is the total number of electron carriers formed in the citric acid cycle?

e) Summarize the electron transport chain (it's main purpose): What do the electrons that have been stripped away from Glucose now power in this step?

f) Chemiosmosis: summarize and describe the end result.

CONNECTION: What form of energy powers the ATP synthase (a membrane enzyme (protein) complex)

2) 6.6-6.8 Due 11/6

WHILE YOU READ FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING: (no need to do any diagramming for this assignment - we will diagram during video/class lessons)

a) List the three stages of cell respiration and the purpose of each.

- CONNECTION 1: What type of membrane transport would have to PUMP hydrogen ions during the third stage?

b) What type of energy is used to make ATP (see chemiosmosis).

- CONNECTION 2: What is phosphorylation? (you may have to look this up - page 82)

c) GLYCOLYSIS: What does it mean for pyruvate to become oxidized?

4) Remainder (6.13-6.16) due 11/11

WHILE YOU READ FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING:

a) When is lactic acid fermentation used in muscle cells?

b) What are the differences between lactic acid fermentation and alcohol fermentation

c) What are some types of anaerobes? Difference between facultative and obligate anaerobes?

CONNECTION: What category of organisms evolved glycolysis?

DIAGRAM/CONNECTION - Add the diagram 6.15. Add at least TWO biochem connections to your chart.
